Finally the day has come! Yes the book has been through the last few days of revisions and checks, and is now available to order from lulu.com!

Copies are £12.99 each, and are printed directly in the UK or the US depending on where you order from, so delivery times are kept to a minimum, my proof copy took 8 days to arrive, so allow plenty of time if you are ordering a copy for Christmas!

Disco Pigs Canned

It was made to my attention that Disco Pigs didn't receive enough pre-orders for them to do a pressing of HD-DVD discs, so they have canned the title.

Which now just leaves 1 title to be released;

At least Bandai will hold their word and release the combo disc title in a yet to be confirmed August release date, though going by their previous release dates its probably almost certain to be the 19th or 26th of August, my moneys on the 26th!

I've removed the following titles from the Italian exclusive list as these actually were never released on HD-DVD as previously thought and got pushed onto Blu-ray at the last minute, these Mondo Home titles are the titles that never got released;

Death Proof Cancelled & More!

Amazon.de has removed the listing of Death Proof on HD-DVD bringing to end any hope we may have had for this title.

Freedom: 6 has officially been released, though you will have to wait a little while as the website states its expected to ship from the 4th July direct from Bandia Visuals online shop only.

Disco Pigs' release date has gone by but I can't find a retailer that has it in stock, Amazon states 4-6 weeks for delivery while others state 'on order' so for now this will remain in the coming soon list.

The updated upcoming HD-DVD list now looks like this...with Torchwood being possibly the last HD-DVD only title, what with the Freedom titles being on Combo discs.

Torchwood Confirmed For Release

All major retailers have this week removed Trainspotting and Shallow Grave from their release schedules confirming the titles won't be coming out on HD-DVD.

In a turn of good news though, BBC have now listed the HD-DVD version of Torchwood : The Complete First Series on their website available to pre-order, previously only the Blu-Ray version was listed but has now been joined by the HD version.
Some people feared it would never come out especially after other recent titles have got the chop (See above).

Torchwood : The Complete First Series is out 30th June 2008 RRP is a high £54.99 but its one the last HD-DVD's ever but you can pick it up for under £39, and its a cracking series that I recommend to anyone.

Warners Last HD-DVD's

Warners last HD-DVD titles came out this week P.S I Love You and Twister leaving just 3 three titles to come out in the states.

I've removed Planet Terror from the upcoming German list, this late in the game with no set date or pre-order means certainly it won't be coming out now.

Amazon UK has sent out pre-order info for Trainspotting on HD-DVD, it lists it with a RRP of £24.99 and a release date of 20th October 2008! After last weeks news of no such title even being readied for HD release it seems very strange and probably another error in the form of a DVD or Blu-Ray release date....

Amazon UK also now lists the BBC title Torchwood : Series 1 previously only listed by Play.com and HMV, though there is a mistake in the form on the picture used is the Blu-Ray case doh!

So the updated worldwide release schedule looks like this;

I am afraid that the Channel 4 titles have been cancelled. Suspicious about lack of art work to date I emailed Channel 4 and this was the response:

Thank you for contacting Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries regarding TRAINSPOTTING and SHALLOW GRAVE.

Unfortunately, these particular films have not been released through Channel
4 DVD or any other distributor in HD format, and we have no plans at present to do so.

Thanks to Dave for the message, though it doesn't explain why roughly 10 retailers in the UK still list both titles for release only 3 weeks before both are due and why they did in the first place?
So for now the titles will remain in the upcoming list basically until release date and we know one way or the other, it certainly isn't looking too good now though for these titles.

Amazon UK Relist 2 Previously Due UK Titles

Update: Another error on Amazon's part, these have both been removed from their site, like I said, I hope no-one got their hopes up too much!

Amazon UK have in the last few days relisted the 2 titles below, that were due for release in the UK in the next couple of weeks and previously thought cancelled due to both parties referring to Blu-ray.

This could either be a mistake on Amazon's part or be some small miracle the companies involved want to make a little more cash while they can and since the discs were all but done anyway then it makes sense, normally it wouldn't matter too much as HD-DVD's are region free and most people would have bought from the US, but the big factor here is The Kite Runner was canned in the US before release so if it indeed does get released it would be a UK exclusive title!

I've added both to the coming soon section, but be warned this may be another listing mistake so don't get all your hopes up just yet!

Looks like last weeks French release His Majesty Minor (Sa majeste minor) never made it to stores and was cancelled at the last minute.
I've removed Hannibal from the French exclusive lists, originally due out last summer this title will never be released.
Amazon UK now have a holding page up for Trainspotting HD-DVD another great sign that this along with Shallow Grave will still be hitting HD-DVD in June.
Another title due out last week but never showed up was Ganges from the BBC, Amazon had it listed right upto launch day but was removed as the launch day came and past.

Torchwood Still Hitting HD-DVD?

Play.com have today listed Torchwood : Series 1 as down for release on 30th June as a pre-order, they recently this week cleaned up their coming soon section to remove previously cancelled titles and today added the BBC title as a pre-order.

We are still not 100% on this coming out, originally it was planned to hit day and date with the Blu-Ray version but with no news and only a listing of Torchwood BD on the BBC site it seemed destined to never be released.....

I've added it to the UK coming soon and UK exclusive lists until we hear more, but here's hoping the BBC are still supporting HD a little while longer!

Puccini : La Boheme is coming to US HD-DVD, already out in Europe, this is Opus Arts last release in the US, coming April 29th you can pre-order it from amazon here.
Removed I Am Legend from the UK coming soon list, Sendit.com were the last place to remove it and they now say its been deleted and no chance of them getting hold of it.
Digital Video Essentials : HD Basics gets pushed back a week in the UK, its now being released next week (14th April)
Beowulf is in stock in a couple of UK retailers, no sign of We Own The Night as yet, if Play.com don't recieve any stock this week then its obvious that its been canned and will be deleted off the upcoming UK list.

Been updating what I could find on Russian HD titles.

Have found previously unknown release date of Graf Montenegro was in-fact released last year and bundled with the Toshiba HD-E1KR in Russia.

Opus Arte Cancel Future HD-DVD Titles.

Opus Arte have confirmed in their March newsletter they have cancelled all future HD-DVD titles following the announcement from Toshiba.
This goes against the news I posted on Saturday which was in-fact a listing mistake on my part and was a Euroarts release and not Opus Arte.
So another final blow especially as the arts titles were steady sellers and are on a par with blu-ray sales in some places, so it's sad to see that no new titles will follow for the sake of just supporting one format.
The remaining titles have been removed from the UK upcoming and Exclusive lists.

In other news, I've added the IMAX title Mystery Of The Nile to the Spanish exclusive list after being cancelled from a US release.

UK Title Update

Just a small update with a few changes and information regarding the UK release list.

Beowulf was listed as a Paramount title by mistake, and is in fact being released by Warner in the UK, Paramounts final ever title was Into The Wild on the 10/03/08 in the UK, and this is looking increasing likely to be Warner's last title in the UK.

Still 6 other titles still up in the air whether they will be released or not;

We Own The Night - Universal - 7th April - Play - Cancelled?
Only Play.com still have it up for pre-order, Battlestar is confirmed for release next week as mentioned above, so a chance of this being Universals last title is still a possibility, though with Amazon UK among others removing the title it looks pretty slim, 2/10 chance of release.

Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, The - Warner - 21st April - Sendit - Cancelled?
Only Sendit.com have it listed and even they say its been deleted but they may be able to get hold of it, looks very unlikely to be released. 1/10 chance of release.

Bonny And Clyde : 40th Anniversary Edition - Warner - 21st April - Sendit - Cancelled?
A few retailers, Sendit.com/Whsmith/Woolworths/Play.com/Tesco all have it still up among the very few titles left, so a release may still be happening or the cancelled info may be have not been reached these places yet! 4/10 chance of release.

I Am Legend - Warner - 12th May - Sendit - Cancelled?
Only Sendit.com have it listed and even they say its been deleted but they may be able to get hold of it, looks unlikely to be released. But its a big box office hit so a release is still there if very slim. 2/10 chance of release.

Zulu - Paramount/4dvd? - 2nd June - Sendit - Cancelled?
I read that Sky TV in the UK paid for this film to be 'transfered' as it were to HD, also that 4dvd would have distribution rights even though its a Paramount film for the UK, it's still a possibility if this is true as 4dvd are one of few remaining HD-DVD supporters, but so far only Play.com with a holding page and Sendit.com list it, but not as the other titles on Sendit's site its listed without the deleted notice so things could be pretty good for a release! 6/10 chance of release.
UPDATE: They now list this as being deleted but saying they may be able to get hold of it. So now 3/10

Sweeny Todd : The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street - Warner - 9th June - Sendit - Cancelled?
Only Sendit.com have it listed and even they say its been deleted but they may be able to get hold of it, plus the 3 weeks delay from the DVD/BD version is outside the May date they announced, so looks very unlikely to be released. 1/10 chance of release.
UPDATE: They confirm its not coming out and removed option of pre-ordering. So I've deleted off upcoming UK list.

The retailer Whsmith already has a number of 4dvd titles in stock due for release next week, these include, Touching The Void, East Is East, and The Motocycle Diaries, at least we know for sure these are being released even at this late stage! Also confirmed as being released is the UK version of Battlestar Galactica - Season 1, which is available to buy on the Universal-Playback site and Whsmith has it now in stock.

HMV has listed another Opus Arte title due out 31st March - Mahler Symphony No 2, this is in the wake of most studios going Blu-Ray exclusive, and even Opus Arte has only listed new Blu-Ray releases in their coming soon section lending speculation to them ending HD-DVD support, but this new listing could prove valuable for HD-DVD art fans, we wait with baited breathe if the release date holds true!

Death Proof gets delayed again! A new date of 30th June has been listed for release in Germany.

Play.com a major UK online retailer is having a massive HD clearout, over 50 titles have been reduced to £7.99 or 3 for £20! See via this link. Atonement is part of this offer! I've just tried adding 3x of this film and its coming up as £19.98!

Since hddvdstats.com aren't updating the total discs for the US, I've switched the link to use High-Def Digests HD historical release date page, the total number of discs listed is 441 but I've taken 12 off as they are re-issues of the same film mostly non-combo, so the total number of discs in the US is 429.

BBC Drops HD-DVD?

Though not confirmed as yet its pretty much certain the BBC has dropped the HD-DVD format now, upcoming titles Torchwood : Series 1 is only listed for Blu-Ray on Amazon and BBC Shop, as well as Ganges and Wild China being listed as Blu-Ray only on the BBC America Shop...so I've removed Torchwood and Ganges off the upcoming UK schedule and exclusive list.

Removed Ran (aka Chaos) off UK release schedule as this will never now be released.

Removed the two Warner titles Clubland and LA Confidential that won't see the light of day and were announced prior to Warner decision.

Other UK titles not certain of release are We Own The Night - a lot of retailers have removed the listing for this but several others retailers (including play.com) who have removed other titles still have it listed, so for now until we hear otherwise its still due for release, but don't hold your breath!

The Opus Arte titles are in doubt, normally after a new release they list details on their upcoming HD title on their website, but in the last couple of months no new details have emerged, only for Blu-Ray titles that are playing catch up on HD releases, the US will get Verdi on the 25th March, so maybe some news may follow, but considering the state of the market this may well be the last Opus Arte release.

Earth (Un jour sur terre) - The French HD as listed last week was a mistake by Amazon France (surprise!) and has now been removed from their site (and this one).
Caramel - BAC Video - 13/03/08 - Has been removed from the French upcoming titles as the publisher won't be releasing a HD version as originally planned.

Last Week's Events

Against what was announced last week, The Godfather Trilogy will NOT be coming to HD-DVD, this was an error on Amazon UK's ordering system and has now been rectified.

So much for the contract.
Paramount Pictures has cancelled ALL upcoming HD-DVD releases in the US, what this means for the UK's releases is still up in the air, but obviously it could spell the end of the great Paramount list that was announced only 3 weeks ago, and this would be the final blow as they have 27 out of the 65 announced titles for UK release, nearly half!
Unofficially Dreamworks have also followed suit meaning the cancellation of Bee Movie, though we will wait until official announcements of all UK titles before removing off the upcoming lists.

Another title due to hit the UK, somehow slipped through the net is;

Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life

Wow what a week Is all I can say!
Sure we all knew what might happen after Warner withdraw from it's HD-DVD side of things, but we didn't know how fast things would drop in one week.

Even with the major studios going to blu-ray you may or may not have noticed they didn't announce going blu-ray exclusive like Warner did, this leaves them open to release as much or as little as they see fit depending on sales of future releases.

Even in the UK after the worst week in HD-DVD history we have new releases being announced, here we have a couple more due in the summer.

As far as UK releases they are all still go, though for a couple of exceptions which are Warner titles (Clubland, LA Confidential) which look very much in doubt now.

What does it mean for the future of HD-DVD?
Well of course since the players production lines have ceased and what little units left will make out there will result in there never being more than 1-1.5 million players out there and the major studios will feel it first, my prediction of how long literally HD has left before no more movies will be released.

Major Studio Releases (Universal/Paramount) - Most releases will be done by June/July, a couple of major blockbusters may be released on HD up to Xmas 2008.

Medium Studio Releases (Kinowelt etc) - Have stated all announced titles will still hit HD, though its unknown how many will be released after these dates (Mar/Apr) My guess would be only if sales are there, continuing up to Xmas 2008 with a couple of releases a month. On a side note it looks like Hairspray (MHE) release has been canned.

Smaller Studio Releases (Opus Arte etc) - Since they are specialist releases, they will always have the people that bought a HD player in the first place and as long as they make a profit should keep churning the releases out, well this side of Xmas at least!

Tesco.com the UK's largest supermarket chain, has listed on their website Drillbit Taylor a Paramount film due out on March 21st in the US cinemas and 28th for the UK, with a RRP of £24.99 and a release date of July 21st - which seems unlikely from this early perspective of things.
This means it would only have 4 months from screen to disc, though Bourne Ultimatum did it (August-Dec) so don't rule this early date to retailers just yet.

Some specs for the title include a 16:9 picture from 1:78:1, sound is English in DD5.1 and a Polish dub in DTS-HD!

You won't have long to wait as it's release date is 06/02/08 - just 3 days away!

New HD Titles On The Way

Dolmen Video and Mikado have announced to go HD DVD only in Italy.
Their first four movies are;

Kyashan - La rinascita (Italian Exclusive)
Shinobi
Reincarnation (Italian Exclusive)
Wolf Creek

No specs or language details are yet known, but the first three will be moved to the Italian page in the coming soon section as Wolfcreek has already had a US release, while Shinobi will be listed until details of language audio is announced, the French and Japanese don't have English audio or subs so hope is low for this version until known.

Also announced but not confirmed as yet, Dutch Film Works (DFW) next wave of titles due out in March will include a HD exclusive version of True Romance.

Play.com in the UK have listed the following titles on their site as yet without dates, but as with all HD releases they have listed these are sure to come out in the next few months, the titles are;

I've over the last couple of days been checking and listing the best UK prices for all foreign titles (including UK exclusive) listed on this site. (Japan will follow shortly)
The best price can be found next to the title in question, if no price is listed then its either a rare title, out of print or the retailer doesn't ship to the UK.
I've also added the retailers that sell the specific countries titles on that page for ease of comparing prices. I hope this information is helpful in your quest to buy a foreign title.

Lastly as you have probably heard Toshiba have slashed the prices off hardware in the US, so we are probably wondering when and if Toshiba will do the same for the UK? Well wonder no more as of immediate effect prices have dropped as the following;

As of time of writing the only place to get these prices is from the official Toshiba website, expect other retailers to change their prices sometime next week.
Great prices even amongst the uncertainty, at under £150 for the EP30 it's still a great time to pick one up.

EDIT : Play.com and Amazon.co.uk both have the EP30 for £119 and the EP35 for £189! Great savings, go pick one up for these prices!

Hardware News.

Toshiba's EP30 has been released finally after another week delay to Independant retailers, my machine arrived Thursday, and I must say it's a superb looking machine, with a decent startup time and some great looking menu's, the improvement over the Xbox 360 add-on is greatly noticed not only in much sharper picture, the 'judder' has seemed to have vanished and the audio of course is a heck of a lot better......that alone would be reason enough to get one, let alone the 7 free movies you get with it for under £200! If you haven't upgraded i recommend you do at the earliest chance!
The EP35 has suffered a small delay also, now being available from the 19th November....

New Release From Opus Arte

Another new release from Opus Arte/BBC, Cecilia & Bryn At Glyndebourne the press release states;
"The celebrated Cecilia Bartoli joins Bryn Terfel for a recital of arias and duets recorded at the beautifully refurbished Glyndebourne Opera House. The programme features favourite pieces from Mozart, Rossini and Donizetti, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Myung-Whun Chung."
With 7.1 sound, 16:9 picture with a running time of 90 mins and English, French & German subtitles round this package off.
It's due out 1st January 2008 at RRP £29.99.

New Firmware Update & More Delays!

The UK has finally been given it's 2.5 update this week for HD-DVD player models E1/EP10/XE1.
"This firmware update includes support for 1080p/24Hz OUTPUT (for HD-XE1 and HD-EP10), additional OSD languages, improved network connectivity supporting the download of web-enabled network content associated with certain HD DVD discs, and also addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related issues identified by Toshiba."

Another new music title hits the UK exclusively on HD-DVD this Christmas with Robbie Williams : Live At The Albert which was recorded live back in 2001 and contains a 12 page booklet and 22 songs on the disc, it's due out November 26th at a retail price of £24.99.

Yet more delays in the UK release schedule, though nothing major its probably more of a re-scheduling than anything as a domino affect from week to week seemed to have happened.

Ultimate Bourne Collection Set UK Date

Sorry for the lack of updates this week.
Anyway good news has come in a very quiet few weeks for UK HD-DVD, The Ultimate Bourne Collection will hit the UK on the same day and date as the DVD version, that being the 10th December 2007 and will retail for £49.99.

BBC drama Bleak House has been put back until next February according to HMV, the new date set is 11/02/07, it was previously thought this title was due to change what with the retail price constantly changing from £29-£34-£39, and more recently play.com removing their listing on the title....it's not sure what the reason is, but lets hope the BBC keeps it's other HD titles on course for release in 2 weeks time.

Another two titles were released in the UK this week, with next week begins the start of the tital wave of some 60 more titles hitting the UK before Christmas!
